Arsenal star draws criticism after snubbing journalist at Spanish Grand Prix

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka became the unexpected centre of attention at the Spanish Grand Prix after refusing a live television interview, prompting criticism from pundits and fans alike.

The Arsenal and England winger was among several national team stars in attendance at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, ahead of England’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Andorra. But while team-mates Harry Kane and Dan Burn were happy to chat during Sky Sports’ traditional Formula 1 grid walk, Saka declined the opportunity—leaving pundit Nico Rosberg unimpressed.

Sky presenter Simon Lazenby approached the 22-year-old during the live broadcast, saying, “Bukayo, can we have a quick word? We’re live on Sky at the moment.” Saka briefly looked toward the camera, shook his head, and responded: “Not much to say,” before turning away.

The moment, although brief, drew an immediate reaction. Lazenby moved on with a polite laugh, but Rosberg—standing in for regular host Martin Brundle—quickly remarked, “That was not very friendly.”

While there’s no obligation for guests on the F1 grid to speak on camera, the expectation is that invited VIPs offer a few comments if approached. Saka’s decision not to engage stood in stark contrast to the warm reception from Kane, who enthusiastically discussed his excitement at attending his first F1 race.

“I’m good, I’m hot,” said the England captain with a smile. “It’s my first [F1 race], I’m looking forward to it. I watch the F1 as much as I can—Lando [Norris] has been doing great this year. Hopefully he can win today, and of course George [Russell] and Lewis [Hamilton], it’d be great to see them on the podium.”

While Kane’s response won praise, social media users were quick to voice disappointment in Saka’s brief appearance. One user wrote: “Bukayo Saka winning no fans by refusing to be interviewed whilst on the F1 grid.” Another added: “That should be the last time Bukayo Saka gets invited to the F1 grid.”

Still, some defended the young Arsenal star, pointing out his right to privacy and focus, especially with international duties looming.

The event itself was a historic one, as McLaren locked out the front row of the grid for the first time at the Spanish Grand Prix since 1998, with Oscar Piastri starting on pole ahead of teammate Lando Norris. Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton started fourth and fifth respectively, just behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
